Question

I want to stop smoking but I have no will power. All my friends smoke and when they offer me a cigarette, I can't resist. I don't want to use patches or gum. What can I do?

Answer

It sounds like you are beginning to think about whether you really want to smoke cigarettes anymore, which is a very positive thing.

Giving up smoking is never easy but it might help if you start to understand your habit. This will help you to start looking at what triggers you to smoke and what alternatives you have. The good news is, there are a lot of alternatives to patches and gums which could be more suitable for you.

If your friends smoke as well, why not get them on board so you can all try giving up together? If all else fails remember that smoking can be a very expensive habit both financially and healthwise. This might also help you when you are having moments of weakness. In addition, you might find it useful to contact Quitline on 0800 00 22 00, they can give you more information and help with strategies and advice for giving up
