Question

At what age should you start examining your breasts? Is there a specialist that I can see as I don't fully understand how to carry them out myself.

Answer

The earlier you start checking your breasts regularly the better. This is so that you can gain an awareness of how your breasts usually look and feel and be ready to notice any changes. Also, although breast cancer occurs more frequently in older women it can still happen at any age.

There really is no right or wrong way to check your breasts. The Breakthrough Breast Cancer website advises: "There is no need to follow a fancy routine, just be aware of any changes in your breasts. You can do this by looking and feeling in any way that makes you feel most comfortable, at a time that makes you feel most comfortable - in the bath, shower, when dressing, standing or lying down."

For further information on self examination you can call the Breast Cancer Care helpline on 0808 800 6000 where a trained advisor will be able to talk you through the process. You could also speak to your local doctor (GP)  for advice about this.
