Penis colour concerns
Question
I was circumcised two years ago due to phimosis. I'm now 16 years-old and I'm not happy with how my penis looks. When it's flaccid it's mainly a pink colour, but the rim of it has a purple and blue tinge to it. When it's erect the colour is still noticeable. I've been to my doctor three times because I'm so worried it doesn't look normal, but they haven't been able to reassure me. Is there anything I can do?
Answer
It's not uncommon for men to worry about the way their penis looks, and it's understandable you have concerns since having your operation for phimosis. Changes in colour are completely normal and you are certainly not alone in experiencing this.
Embarrassing Problems provides reassuring advice for the purple/blue patches you see when your penis is erect. It explains that: "It is normal for the head of the penis (glands) to change colour. Often it is quite red when aroused, and a more purple colour at other times. This is because the skin of the glands has lots of tiny blood vessels near its surface, so the colour just represents the changes in blood flow."
If you notice that the skin is sore, red or frequently very irritated there could be a risk of a condition such as balanitis. Whilst uncomfortable and painful, balanitis is not immediately harmful and in your case is unlikely since it can result from phimosis, a problem which you have now addressed.
It's important to seek out the advice of a doctor (GP) if you have health concerns. If you are still worried then please do go back to your doctor to be examined. Alternatively, you could visit you nearest Brook Centre for confidential advice or call the helpline on 0800 0185 023.
