Suddenly spotty

Question

I always thought I was lucky because I've never really suffered from spots. Now I'm 25 and suddenly I've got loads. Do you have any idea why I would get acne so suddenly?

Answer

As it's impossible to diagnose anything over the internet we can't definitely say what's causing your acne. Nearly 70% of us get acne, at some stage and in differing degrees. Most people experience spots in their teens, anywhere from the face to the neck, back or chest, but many are affected in their 20s and 30s.

There are things you can do to try and minimise your flare-ups. A healthy diet is important, as is drinking lots of water, which helps to flush out any toxins in your body. Gently exfoliating and using antibacterial face washes may also help alleviate the problem.

You may find it useful to look at our factsheet about spots which which contains lots of useful information and tips. If these things don't help it's worth a visit to your local doctor (GP). Doctors can prescribe specific treatments to help deal with spots, and they can also refer you to a dermatologist if they feel it's necessary.
