Molluscum
It might sound more like a snail, but it's actually a skin condition that can take an age to go away.
What is it?
A viral skin infection picked up and passed on through skin-to-skin contact. Sexual contact can also transfer molluscum, as can sharing towels, bedding and clothes with someone who has the infection.
The symptoms
Small, fleshy spots that can crop up all over body. If sexually transmitted, the spots tend to be concentrated around the genital region, thighs and lower part of the stomach. An outbreak can last for a couple of months to several years.
How is it treated?
- The condition will pass without treatment, even though molluscum can take a long time to clear up.
- As well as being patient, aim to be as hygienic as you can, and always wash your hands if you've touched any spots.
- In some cases, your doctor (GP) may consider removing large, visible or unsightly molluscum by freezing them off under a local anaesthetic.
