Bad gas
Question
I've been having problems with the gas supply to my home. The landlord says it isn't his problem, but if the pipes aren't his legal responsibility, who is responsible for them?

Responsibility for gas pipes and appliances are split between the house owner (or landlord) and Transco. Transco have responsibility for the pipes as far as the meter and then the house owner or landlord is in charge from there. If you're in rented property the landlord must have all appliances checked and, if necessary, repaired by a CORGI registered engineer every year. The landlord must also provide you with a copy of the engineer's report.
If the landlord fails to carry out the inspection and appropriate repairs they can be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE operate a free phone Gas Safety Advice Line on 0800 300363 and this would be a good place to call to discuss your current problems and to see how they can help you resolve them.
