Coming off different drugs
1 2 next steps
A substance-by-substance guide to kicking the habit. Remember, professional help is always available.
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol can lead to physical dependency but normally it's the psychological dependence that is more difficult to overcome.
Amphetamines (speed)
Long term users can become psychologically dependent on the buzz from speed. In chronic cases, a form of psychosis can kick in that requires medical treatment.
Cannabis
Quitting cannabis won't result in physical withdrawal symptoms - but, if you smoke it in a spliff, the nicotine in tobacco will. Some long-term users report psychological problems being weed-free.
Cocaine and crack
Regular use of cocaine or crack can create a habit that's hard to kick. Stopping can cause exhaustion, anxiety and paranoia.
