American Driveaway

Fancy crossing the States without paying a dime in car hire? Read on.

Highway

The highway

How does it work?

There are countless reasons why someone would want their car shipped from one side of the country to the other, or even just state to state - what matters is that the companies who oversee delivery need drivers like you. Companies such as driveaway, and amtransco work by matching up cars-to-be-moved with drivers-who-want-to-get-to-the-same-destination, and the result is a motor-marriage made in heaven.

What's the cost?

There isn't one. You might even get a flash car, too. Some companies chuck in a full tank of petrol, after which you fill up at your own expense, but there's no charge for the use of the vehicle providing you stick to the agreed route. Expect to pay a deposit of $250 - $500, refundable on delivery.

What's the catch?

So long as you're a responsible driver, and aren't tempted to spank the car from start to finish, you'll find the whole deal to be one of the cheapest means of travelling in the States. You'll have to sign an agreement undertaking not to smoke at the wheel, or go street racing in it and stuff, so if you do trash the car by your own stupidity, or turn up with an extra thousand miles on the clock, you could find yourself on the wrong side of the law. So long as you understand the terms before you sign, however, you'll have nothing to worry about.

What if the car gets nicked?

Providing you took all required precautions to protect the vehicle, you'll be covered under the company's insurance. You and the vehicle will also be insured in the event of an accident, but always check the terms of the agreement (including all insurance documentation) before you sign.

What do I need?

You must be over 21, with a full, clean driving licence, and an International Driving Permit. Application forms are available online from most driveaway websites (see above), and you'll need to provide your ideal departure and arrival dates too.
